NGV Opening for Yayoi Kusama | Gala Commission
Last Saturday we had the honour of creating a custom bespoke dress for the stunning interior designer, Sandra Ludon, for her debut at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Gala for the opening of the incredible Yayoi Kusama, an artist whose philosophy and praxis inspires parts of our modus operandi.
We created this gala dress with unbleached cotton, Tencel, matching crinoline fabric, custom red bamboo bra cups, and multi coloured dots hand drawn with a new textile marker medium for us inspired by Yayoi Kusama's work, The Obliteration Room, a work designed around collection participation where viewers of a white space were invited to cover the room with red, blue, yellow and green dots, as an invitation to participate in her process of "obliteration," or "the complete destruction of every trace of something."
The democratic nature of this particular work was the inspiration behind this gala dress, creating a bridge between the exclusivity of the event and the collective art making that happens by all who not only attend but create for and participate in viewership of the opening night.
Thank you, Sandra, for the opportunity to dress you for this iconic gala evening inspired by an artist who in practice and ethics inspires our approach to art.
